Today is the end of the first trinity of our Holly Days. This one is about community: Unity, Compassion and Kindness.
On Monday, a judge in Argentina granted Sandra, an Orangutan, non-human personhood. Hard to know what this will mean, not like she will be getting an apartment and a job in Buenos Aires, but the unity of our collective life on earth is a just got a bit stronger.
We are just utterly in all this together. The clear reality is that there is a very clear purpose entailed in ‘this view of life’. It is no longer an evasive philosophical mystery, we know where we come from and why we are here, however recursive it may seem. That is that every single one of the beings who have ever lived on this earth are the creators and guardians of the incredibly beautiful and wondrous phenomenon that is us.
Our role in this drama is inescapably. I hope this emergence of the breathtaking complexity we are all so inextricably joined in can someday unite us all with compassion for all our fellow beings. Even the ones who only love shopping for shoes or think Fox news is actually news. I’m trying.
