I haven’t been posting my usual Holly Days rants. Been a very weird year for me, but when this popped up on this Day of Truth, I thought to share.
I once (decades ago while she was doing press junkets for Harold and Maude) heard Ruth Gordon say the key to living long and being happy was to “never face facts.” It has continued to nag at me since I have always held finding and standing up for the truth as the most essential value.
But while some social scientific research has shown that self deception can be palliative, I continue to believe that in the long run the truth will always help us better calibrate our responses, and engage more effectively. I hold the truth to be a positive value as a matter of faith, one of the few points of faith in my life.
